Abstract In order to develop a 1kW-class gyromill type vertical axis wind turbine with high performance and low manufacturing cost, optimum shape of the rotor blade is designed and also, the flow and structural characteristics of the turbine are investigated using CFD and uni-directional FSI analysis. The purpose of this study is to examine the validity of blade shape to achieve optimum performance, and to examine the structural stability of the wind turbine system. For the analysis, a commercial code of ANSYS 12 is adopted. The velocity and pressure around the rotor blade as well as output torque from the rotor are scrutinized. In order to perform FSI analysis, the pressure result of CFD has been mapped on the surface of wind turbine as load condition. The rotational speed and gravitational force of wind turbine are also considered. The results of analysis show that the 1kW-class gyromill wind turbine reveals relatively good performance, and has an enough structural margin. The maximum structural displacement occurs at trailing edge of blade and the maximum stress occurs at the strut.
