Abstract This paper shows the importance of mooring dynamics on motion responses and mooring line tensions of OC4 semi-submersible floating wind turbine(OC4) developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory(NREL). A motion analysis of OC4 was carried out in compliance with the OC4 definition using UOU+FAST+OrcaFlex. UOU is an in-house code for hydrodynamic coefficients. OrcaFlex is a time domain simulation program for modeling moored floating structures and can predict a dynamic performance of moored floaters in waves. FAST is also a time domain simulation program for floating offshore wind turbines with the mooring line forces treated by a quasi-static approximation. Quasi-static mooring approximation can underestimate peak tensions. FAST+OrcaFlex has been developed by Orcina and OrcaFlex replaces FAST's quasi-statics of the mooring system by dynamics.
